Department of Archaeology

Job Purpose
To contribute actively to teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level, to undertake high-quality research in archaeology and to carry out administration as requested by the Head of Department.
Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. To develop and maintain individual/joint research projects in subject area and, where appropriate, to secure the funding required, as appropriate, for research projects.

2. To contribute fully to developing and enhancing the research profile of the Department including establishing a track record of publications of international quality in leading journals.

3. Attendance and participation in appropriate research seminars/conferences within subject related area.

4. To contribute to the planning, organisation and delivery of undergraduate & post graduate teaching activities within subject area in accordance with established Department programme.

5. To supervise individual student projects and assist with difficulties e.g. learning support/problems.

6. To contribute to the ongoing development and design of the curriculum, in a manner that supports a research-led approach to student learning.

7. To engage in professional development as appropriate.

8. To participate fully in the assessment process (using a variety of methods and techniques) and provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students that support their learning.

9. To undertake departmental administration, specifically course-related, as requested and supported by the Head of Department.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential
A1 Good first degree and Ph.D. in archaeology
A2 A good postgraduate research profile in archaeology
A3 Geographic scope: Mediterranean, preferably the eastern basin
A4 Chronological scope: prehistory
A5 A comprehensive and up to date knowledge of research within subject areas

Desirable
B1 Familiarity with and an interest in theory, interpretation and material culture
B2 Experience in methodological skills e.g. GIS and/or satellite imagery, environmental archaeology, science-based analysis of artefacts
B3 Up to date knowledge and an understanding of relevant areas of the curriculum
B4 Working knowledge of a relevant (Mediterranean) language
B5 Valid (European) driving license

D4 Ability to take initiative in developing expertise in research activity, e.g. identifying opportunities for conference participation, publications and research dissemination

Experience
Essential
E1 Ability to contribute to the Department’s postgraduate taught (PGT) programme in Mediterranean Archaeology and at least one other existing programme
E2 Minumum of 2 years postdoctoral research experience in subject related area
E3 Presenting and publishing academic research in an international environment
E4 Experience of undergraduate teaching
E5 Experience of constructing and applying for grant funding
